Hair @ the Saftas
The 10th annual South African Film and Television Awards took place at the Gallagher Estate on Sunday, and like many award shows this year, there were the occasional hair hits and many hair misses. There were so many hair-raising dos, that we decided to narrow it down to just 10. Here are our top hair hits and misses that made their way down the #saftas10 red carpet.
Safta Hair Hits
Lorna Maseko 8/10
Yay Lorna, what a step up from the hot-mess we saw at the Metro FM Music Awards. Lorna has her hair down, in a simple semi-sleek, side part hairstyle. You really can’t go wrong with this look, ladies, it’s easy, simple and safe. One thing we would have recommended Lorna do is to lay her edges and make her hairstyle look that much sleeker. Overall we think Lorna deserves a fabulous 8/10.

Minnie Dlamini 7.5/10
As usual, South Africa’s diamond had her #weavegame on point this past weekend. While hosting the #saftas10 Minnie managed to pull off 4 fabulous outfit changes. She graced the red carpet with her hair in middle parted, simple shoulder-length bob with a Grecian headpiece. Middle parts work particularly well with symmetrical face shapes. Her bob can be achieved by using 16″ Peruvian Slick Hair. Although we love this Grecian-inspired look, we think Minnie could have stepped it up a bit, maybe adding a knitted braid to add some dimension to her hair, so a 7.5/10 from us.

Bonang Matheba 10/10
Queen B has done it again. This woman is really in a league of her own when it comes to hair, make-up and fashion. Bonang has her hair in a vintage glamour inspired updo, with large, smooth sweeping waves gathered into a low chignon. She has done very well, by shifting our attention away from the hairline, (because we all know what a mess this can be if it not executed properly) and focusing it on the side swoop. Her hairstyle is given a modern twist with the placement of the chignon being off to the side in keeping with recent trends. A perfect 10 from us Bonang.

Terry Pheto 9/10
Terry Pheto dazzled in a short, wavy bob hairstyle. Terry has done so well by choosing a hair texture that blends perfectly with her natural hair. Choosing a texture like Brazilian hair is always a good choice if you are going to leave some of your natural hair exposed. She showed off her romantic waves by sticking to a shorter length. Achieve her look with the Brazilain Swirl, in either 14″ or 16″. Well done Terry a fantastic 9/10 from us.

Safta Hair Misses
Altovise Lawrence 3/10
Curls are probably one of the most difficult textures to pull off, mainly because many women don’t: 1) Shape your hair – if you do not shape or cut your curls to suit your face they will look unnatural. 2) Over do it – when wearing short curls, use fewer bundles than you normally would with other textures. We advice 2-2.5 (maximum) bundles for any lengths shorter than 16″. 3) Use a closure – if you are going to wear your curls in a parted style, you have to wear a closure. A closure will create a natural looking parting, which will make the hair look like it is growing out of your head. 4) Installation – a great installation is key to great looking hair. Find a stylist that knows exactly what you want to achieve, and knows how to do proper installation. If you want your curls to look natural, make sure you invest in great quality hair like the Hair by Sisi Mongolian Bounce Hair and remember to follow the above 4 curl tips.

Mampho Brescia 4/10
This is all kinds of wrong but is honestly a simple fix. We know we also go on about the importance of a closure and a great installation, but this is exactly why. If you don’t wear a closure, you cannot achieve a natural looking parting and the hair at the parting will not lay flat against your head, making it seem like the hair is sitting on top your head, as opposed to growing out of it. If you want your hair to look like the roots are growing out, then make sure the hair is installed in a way the represents this. The positioning on the cornrows have to be in a circular pattern and the weft must be attached to the corn row following the same direction. If you do have the correct placement, when you close the installation at the top to create the crown, it will create a dark circle, which looks very unnatural.

Mmatema Moremi 5/10
A while ago we put up a video on our YouTube channel on how to lay your edges, explaining the reasons and the best way to do so. Laying your edges is crucial to great looking hair, especially when your natural hair starts to grow out. Many times with a full sew-in, your weave texture may not match the exact texture of your natural hair, but by laying your edges you are able to create a sleek, neat look with edges that match your weave. Laying your edges will make it look like your weave hair is growing out of your head. Watch our quick video to learn how to lay your edges.

Boity Thulo 5/10
Wigs are a huge trend lately, and we have been seeing them everywhere. Yes, wigs have their benefits, like quick-on quick-off, but they will be your downfall if you do not customise the hairline. As we can see Boity’s hairline is very dense, and although she made the baby hairs work, the actual hairline is still very thick. No one’s hairline is this thick, so ladies unless you want to walk around looking like Rupaul, always, ALWAYS pluck away at the hairline to make it thinner and more natural.

Khanya Mkangisa 5/10
Ahh Khanyi, we love you, but we do not love your do. Curls are really a struggle ladies, especially when styled in this way. As we can see Khanyi’s natural hairline is exposed, which is great, but because of her choice of hair style, we can clearly see the difference between the weave and her natural hair. There actually was no reason for Khanyi to do anything to her curls. If you want to try this look, we recommend just leaving the curls as is. There is not need to wear a headpiece with curls.

Lelo Boyana 4/10
This is a serious case of bad installation. Ms Lelo B looks stunning, and her hair looks good too, however, her installation is not the greatest. Bad installations will make your hair look unnatural. We would either recommend wearing a closure or blending her natural hair with the weave to make it look like its completely her own hair. Instead of creating this unnatural parting, use a closure and let it do the work.

Nomzamo Mbatha 4/10
The key to great kinky or natural textures is a proper hair care routine, we cannot not stress this enough. Ladies, you have to know this and know it now, natural textures are difficult to manage. Kinky or natural textures mimic our natural hair, and, therefore, face the same (if not more) struggles as our natural hair. They require a lot of moisture, TLC and are not as easy to manage as other silky textures. As we can see with Nomzamo Mbatha, her hair looks dry, fluffy and frizzy, which is a typical characteristic for this type of hair. The curl pattern is also uneven and has fallen flat. Ladies, if you choose to wear any natural textures (particularly with curls), co-washing has to you new BFF. You need to have a weekly maintenance routine to detangle, deep conditioning and add protein to your hair.
And that’s a hair-wrap on the Saftas.
Remember to let us know what you think. Till next time.
Happy weaving.
