Metro Music Awards 2016 hair hit or miss?
This past weekend saw one of South African most celebrated music awards show take place (Metro Music Awards), and boy did the stars look fabulous. The who’s who of the music and entertainment world turned up at the Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex (Durban ICC) in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal. Although the ladies were dressed to the nines, it’s seemed like the biggest faux pas of the evening was not Somgaga’s jab at rapper AKA, but rather that some ladies paid more attention to their gowns, accessories and make-up than they did their hair – tsk tsk. Remember ladies, your hair is your best accessory, so don’t forget her. Here is what we thought of the hair-dos (and don’ts) at this year’s MMA15.
Khanya Mkangisa 8/10
Khanya looked red hot in this tiny fierce number by La Manche, and her hair to boot. If your outfit draws eyes, keep your hair simple. Although these romantic, loose curls may be boring on any given day, they worked very well with the dresses design. 8/10

Boity Thulo 9/10
Boity looked like a mermaid in this turquoise-embellished sheer gown by Quiteria & George. Her hair was super glam, in an old Hollywood-inspired sleek low bun, with a low chignon tucked off to the side. Boity -you nailed it! Every stitch of this look (hair included) looked stunning. However, we would suggest wearing a closure, to make the parting look more natural and flat. Overall, one of the evening’s finest looks yet and for that Boity, we give you a well-deserved 9/10

Khanyi Mbau 7/10
The always-sexy Khanyi Mbau definitely turned heads in her barely there Lloyd Hotsense number. We can’t really say much about her hair because her matching headpiece covered most of it. But what we can say is that her burgundy (and brown) hair colour is on trend! This autumn expect to see 50 shades of burgundy, which lucky for you, is not a difficult colour to achieve. We love the bold hair colour and that she dared to be different (as always), so a 7/10 from us.

Pearl Modiadie 6/10
The gorgeous Pearl Modiadie went all Diana Ross on us and owned every minute of it! Curls are loud and will always draw attention, so styling them is not always necessary. This being said, they can also be boring if left as is, especially when the hair has no contrast (low lights and highlights). Curls are very forgiving and can hide a lot, but remember that you will not need to use as many bundles as you do with straight hair, so don’t overdo it. If wearing a wig, remember to shape her (the wig) for a more natural appearance and DO NOT forget to tweeze the hair line. Because Pearl’s hairline has not been thinned out (pulling out some of the hair along the hairline), it looks very straight and very dense. Although we think the look was brave, the minor errors cause a visible disaster. 6/10

Minnie Dlamini 8/10
South Africa’s diamond, can do no wrong. Minnie Dlamini, is almost always seen rocking weaves and wigs, but she recently decided to rock the 90s box braid trend. Her hair was perfectly styled in what appeared to be a the half-up, half-down bun and it looked fun and elegant, just like her personality. She definitely brought sexy back in this ruby red ensemble, consisting of a feather bra and matching high-waisted satin skirt by Wanita Ka Ngcobo. Go Minnie 8/10.

Thando Thabethe 8/10
Thando looked gorgeous in this royal blue Quiteria & George gown. She paired it with a sleek, side-parted, medium, jet black bob. This is perfection because her gown is detailed, especially the upper part, so keeping the hair above the shoulders worked amazingly well, by showing off the dress and her gorgeous face. 8/10

Amanda du Pont 9/10
Amanda du Pont should change her name to ‘Amanda on Point’ because she was exactly that. The gold and black Anel Botha dress fitted her body perfectly. Her hair was perfectly styled in a simple slick ponytail, which reminded us of Solange’s Met Gala 2015 hairstyle. Good choice @molamudimotsamai 9/10.

Thulisile Phongolo 5/10
Thulisile dazzled in her Mike Lee cocktail dress and had the perfect hair to match. Her long, jet black hair, with a middle part, works so well on her because she has a symmetrical face structure. Unfortunately, the closure parting was not widened, which made the hair look unnatural. Yes, of course, this is not her real hair, but the idea behind the closures is to create a more natural looking install that looks less wiggy, giving you the appearance of a natural looking scalp. So it is crucial to pluck hair along the of parting, so as to widen the parting and make it appear more like a natural part, along your scalp. 5/10

Dineo Moekets 6/10
Dineo looked avant-garde in this yellow and black Quiteria & George creation. She wore a hair extension piece to create a full, sleek high ponytail style. Be careful with this look ladies, especially if your natural hair is thin (usually due to relaxers). If you have thin hair and even though the hair texture of your added extension piece matches very well with your natural, relaxed hair, wearing clip-ins will give your hair more body and volume, but will be undetectable. 6/10

Jessica Nkosi
Yes, Jessica Yess! Miss Nkosi dazzled in a velvet, purple NN Vintage dress. Her voluminous long bob looked romantic and effortless. Well played Jessica 8/10

Kelly Khumalo 9.5/10
Kelly hit the jackpot with a black long sleeve Tsotetsi KL gown and short boys cut hair. What a trendsetter Kelly is. This trend is making its way back into the hair world and Kelly is blazing the trail for others to follow. This hairstyle is usually reserved for small, sharp faced ladies, but recently “weave” seen fuller faces rock this hairstyle just as well. Go Kelly 9.5/10

Khabonina Qubeka 4/10
Even though Khabonina was shining bright like a diamond in this JJ Schoeman creation, we can’t say the same about her hair. Ladies, if you are going to wear a wig, make sure you tweeze or pluck the hairline to make it appear more natural. No one, not even Ru-Paul herself,’s hairline is completely straight and that thick, you have to customise your wigs, before wearing them. 4/10

Fifi Cooper 6/10
Fifi Cooper looked amazing in a midriff and long sleeve burgundy ensemble with brassy blonde hair that matched perfectly with her skin tone. Be careful, however, not to over bleach your weaves, because it can leave the hair dry, which can lead to breakage and frizziness. Also ladies, remember not to place your wig/closure too far back because sometimes the density of your natural hair will not match that of the extensions, even if the texture and colour are the same. Unfortunately, this small mistake will easily expose your hair extensions. 6/10

Bonang Matheba 7/10
“Your girl B”, stole the show with her multiple wardrobe changes. We know it can be difficult to style hair for one dress -image 5. So we don’t blame Queen B for her lack of diversity. She did, however, leave her hair down for one of her looks which did show that some effort was made. B is not known for her daring hairdos, so we can’t really fault her hair, even though it was boring, it wasn’t bad. 7/10

Nomzamo Mbatha 9/10
Nomzamo Mbatha, looked breathtaking in a white mermaid-style gown by Orapeleng Modutle Style Avenue and OMG can we just have a minute for her hair. This Zulu beauty is wearing a natural texture weave/wig which is a huge trend at the moment and one of our best sellers. Natural textures are great because they mimic our natural hair texture, so people will actually think this is your real hair. 9/10

Pearl Thusi 9/10
Pearl Thusi, Pearl Thusi, Pearl Thusi. Yeah, I’m talking ’bout Pearl Thusi. She shocked us all with her 70s inspired mushroom bob. We think that this was a very bold hairdo, because we have’nt seen SA stars on the red carpets do something this different in a very long time. Although many people didn’t understand this look, we think it deserves 9/10.

Lorna Maseko 4/10
Eish, little can be said about this ponytail with a side fringe hairdo. Although Lorna looked sexy in a yellow and black lace by Quiteria & George, we’re not fans of her post-workout hair. Be careful when wearing wigs or frontals, because if the fridge or installation is not correctly done, the hair can look far from natural. We understand the idea of slick hair is intended to complement’s the dress, but the poor execution made her look like a hot mess. 4/10

[…] Lorna, what a step up from the hot-mess we saw at the Metro FM Music Awards. Lorna has her hair down, in a simple semi-sleek, side part hairstyle. You really can’t go […]
