Virgin Hair vs Hair: Know the difference

Virgin Hair vs Remy Hair: For those of you who have been in the hair game for a while or have just started, chances are you have heard the terms Remy and Virgin hair used to describe the type of hair that you can purchase. That fact is, when it comes to hair extensions, weaves, wigs and the human hair products, there is a lot to learn especially because terms can become confusing, misleading and more often than not, terms are used interchangeably. Although both Remy and Virgin hair can accurately describe a particular set of cases, they are not at all the same.

It is important to know that not all hair extensions are human hair, even when they claim to be.  Some hair extension companies (especially online) will mix animal hair and/or synthetic fibres to the hair bundles and still call it “human hair.” This hair is usually very cheap, looks good initially, but will fall apart within weeks. High quality human hair is expensive however it will last longer with proper care.

REMY VS VIRGIN: What is the difference?

Virgin hair extensions are 100% real human hair that has never been altered by any chemical processing. Virgin hair is the highest quality human hair available on the market. This hair is expensive, but lasts longer than remy hair, making it worth the investment.

What is Virgin hair?

Virgin hair is chemically unprocessed human hair, which is collected from a single donor. The Virgin hair is Remy hair that has not been altered in any way. To qualify as Virgin hair, the hair must meet rigorous standards including:

•never permed,

•never dyed,

•never colored,

•never bleached,

•never chemically processed in any way.

Because Virgin human hair is void of these processes, the cuticles are intact. This translates to smooth, tangle free hair. Additionally, the colour that appears in the hair extensions is natural, which is why you see only this colour available when virgin hair extensions are offered. Virgin Hair generally last about 3 years and longer if it properly maintained.

What is Remy hair?

Like with Virgin hair, Remy hair’s cuticles are also intact and face the same direction. Remy hair is gathered from many hair donors and mixed together. The hair that is collected from Remy hair may have been previously processed (colour or otherwise). The hair is collected in such a way as to keep the hair’s cuticles properly aligned. When all the hair strands follow the same direction you know that you are getting the highest quality bundles of Remy hair,  which will be tangle free and remains soft and silky, which is useful in producing higher-quality wigs, extensions and hairpieces. Finally, Remy hair tends to last about 1.5 years, because the hair may have been coloured or permed.

One last thing to keep in mind is that not all hair labeled remy is true Remy hair with cuticle intact, and after 2-3 washes the hair will mat and tangle.

The best thing to do when it comes to hair is to try and test it yourself. Do research, read reviews, follow up with other customers who have worn the hair from the brand you want to buy. Always buy your human hair extension from a reputable company and remember true Virgin and Remy hair are usually more expensive, but will last longer.

So whether you choose to buy our Hair by Sisi Virgin Human Hair or our Remy Human Hair we ensure you will get the best of both worlds.

Co-wash: To eliminate dryness

As winter draws near the temperatures get colder and the air becomes dryers, unfortunately so does our hair. The winter elements can leave your weave feeling dry and looking brittle. So what can be done? The answer is simple, try co-washing your hair. Co-washing is not only great for your weave but it’s also suitable for relaxed, natural and transitioning hair. This solution may seem slightly strange, especially if you have never tried it, but believe me when I say, co-washing your weave will give it life.

So what is it?

DSC_0629

Co-washing is simply washing your hair, except instead of using shampoo, you use conditioner. For your co-wash to really work, you have to make sure you are using a moisturising conditioner and not a protein conditioner. Although protein is good for your hair, a protein conditioner will dry out your hair, which is counter productive when doing a co-wash. By swapping your shampoo for conditioner your hair will not be exposed to the stripping and drying effect which is caused by shampoo. Instead at each application of conditioner, your hair will be moisturised like no other. Try using the Hair by Sisi Hair extensions Conditioner, to perform your perfect co-wash.

Benefits of Co-washing

The general benefit of co-washing your hair is to eliminate dryness. Not only will a co-wash keep your weave healthy and soft, but it will also give much-needed moisture to your natural hair underneath your weave.

How to perform a Co-wash on your hair
I find co-washing your hair once a week gives the best results. After co-washing allow the hair to dry naturally, do not use any electronic drying tools. If you are in a hurry and need to dry your hair quickly, dry it with a hood dryer or a diffuser, but I suggest rather give it a miss and co-wash your hair when you have time.
1) Apply the conditioner to wet or dry hair, but wet hair is easier.
2) Leave the conditioner in your hair for 15 minutes. While the conditioner is still in the hair, detangle your hair using your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
3) Fully rinse out the conditioner or if you have curly hair, leave 5 – 10% of the product in your hair.
4) Allow your hair to air dry.

Dangers of over conditioning your hair

DSC_0634

The over use of a conditioner on your hair can lead to breakage because the conditioner can soften the hair to a point where it begins to break. So, be careful Beweavers, like anything, don’t over do it. If your hair becomes very stretchy when wet or starts mushy, unfortunately, you have over conditioner your hair. But don’t be disheartened, stop any further damage being caused to your hair, by using the Hair by Sisi Leave-in Protein Spray. Develop a habit of using the protein spray at least once a month or more frequently deepening on how regular you co-wash your hair.

So next time your hair looks lifeless, try a co-wash, one wash and you will be hooked.

Until next time beweavers, Happy weaving.
