A Fashion Aff(h)air at Fashion week

This past weekend saw the close of The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg 2016, the largest and leading display of fashion in Africa. Creations by nearly 20 local fashion designers were presented in 14 different shows over a three-day aff(h)air. The event ended on a high note with moments that are sure to set trends both in fashion and hair.

Some of the designers really impressed with their choice of avant-garde hair works, seen in the Stefania Morland, Khothatso Laurence Tsotetsi, Leigh Schubert, Khosi Nkosi and David Tlale shows. Natural hair and natural hair textures were a huge trend on the runways of #mbfwj16 seen at Scalo, Mill Collines and Tamar Cheri shows.

Here are some of our favorite hair moments at this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Joburg.

Scalo and Tsotetsikl show

This was one of our personal favourites. Curls were huge at both the Scalo and Tsotetsikl show. Yes, both designers used the same models on the runway, but the curls worked well at both shows, showing off the simplicity and diversity of curls. Many women worry about curls because they can be difficult to style, however, some of the models at the Scalo show were seen sporting bangs, which are pretty uncommon with this curl pattern. We would have never gone with this style ourselves, but seeing the hair on these women looks incredible, it has actually changed the way we feel about curls. Ladies, if you want to try out this look, make sure to cut your bangs using a lace-front-wig. This will allow you to take the wig on and off when you please, without damaging the hair. If you cut your weave in this style, it will not last as long as a wig, because not only do you sleep with a weave (which will change the shape of the curl pattern in comparison to the rest of your weave) but cutting bangs on your weave, means you will have to part with that hair forever. Once used, you will either have to wear the hair in the same exact style over and over agin, or throw the shorter hair away when you reinstall in a different style. Alternatively, you can buy two bundles of one length and a third 8″ bundle, then cut the short bundle (for you bangs) to your desired length. This way, you won’t waste money by cutting longer hair.

Leigh Schubert show

That hair was fashion forward. At the Leigh Schubert show, the models all rocked short, black mushroom bobs and boy did they look edgy.  This type of hairstyle is making its way back into fashion and was recently seen on Peral Thusi at the Metro Fm Awards, just two weeks ago. In our blog post (Metro Music Awards 2016 Hair hit or miss) we praised Pearl’s bold choice of hairstyle and feel the same way about Leigh Schubert. Ladies, if you want to be different, yet subtle then this is the style for you. It is cool, trendy and elegant at the same time. Beware, many people won’t understand this look, but don’t worry about them, they will soon catch on, trust us. This hairstyle can be achieved using 12” Peruvian Slick hair, which has been bumped (to style).

David Tlale

All hail the King Tlale. This is the kind of hair that really excites us.  Hair is and accessory and should be used to compliment your look. We believe that David Tlale is a trailblazer in fashion because of this very rule. His choice of hairstyle was avant-garde, bold and commands the attention. This obviously is not an everyday hairstyle, but it shows the type thinking that goes into hair creations like these. We would suggest trying the Mongolian Bounce, because, like this hair, it is bold and commands attention, but needs little to no styling, so you can wear and it enjoy it every day.

Mille Collines

Headwraps have been a thing for a while now, but nowadays we are seeing them being more than just bad hair day or beach wear cover-up. They are elegant, fashionable and suit everyone. Mill Collines also showcased a variety of short natural hairstyles along with the beautiful head wraps.

Stefania Morland

Naturally beautiful is what we thought of the hair at the Stefania Morland show. Natural hair textures look beautiful on everyone, and can be worn in a number of different styles. If you have texturized (relaxed, permed, straightened or damaged) your natural hair, and you are looking for a natural texture to match your own, or want to give your hair a bit of extra length, then try out our BlowOut hair.  The hair easy to maintain and looks extremely natural.

Khosi Nkosi

We absolutely loved the hair that was on the Khosi Nkosi runway. Not only was the gorgeous Nomzamo Mbatha wearing another natural texture, but some of the models rocked the trendy Two sided french braid hairstyle. This hairstyle has been doing it’s round locally and abroad and we are so happy to see it paired with the beautiful Khosi Nkosi creations. This hairstyle is very easy to achieve, but should only be worn when wearing a full lace wig. A weave and a front lace wig will leave the weft track exposed, which does not look so good.
